Question:
Is there any issur for a couple with four children of one gender using PGD to insure a fifth child of another gender?
Answer:
While this would be permitted according to the letter of the law, it is something which should be discouraged. All IVF procedures are difficult and tedious and a very great strain on the mother and in this case family. In addition, every IVF involves serious questions of הוצאת זרע לבטלה. So while we permit this to bring children in to the world for someone who is otherwise unable, someone who b"h has the natural ability to bring children in to the world, should leave gender selection up to Hashem. The kiyum of Piya Vrivya according to many Rishonim will occur even with someone with all girls, when they in turn have male children. Even without that, our obligation is to use natural means to bring children in to the world [for someone without fertility problems].
